I've not seen the thermostats with that sort of flap valve but the extended plunger type is shown in a later diagram.
With the thermostat out, if you look down into the hole you will see the top of a tube. This is what is sealed off by the plunger until the stat opens. Hopefully this tube isn't missing. It will be same on your PV.

So far with 89c,a touch on the high side with our hot weather (35c) but acceptable. Just need to adjust the Kenlow fan regulator
FYI QTH 135T 89c.
Mahle TX 8 88d 88c.
Might try the Mahle

Pages 64 and 65 discuss the operation of the flap and the by-pass pipe. Failure to close the by-pass tube typically results in over heating because some of the coolant is not going through the radiator.

thanks, that makes everything clear. Will remove 'stat and make sure that the top of the pipe has not worn and the 'stat actually makes clean contact and rectify if necessary.
