i have just changeed the timing belt on a 2002 2 litre petrol non turbo v40 i checked the timing marks and they are all ok the compression on all cylinders is between 125-130 psi so know all the valves are ok but i am having trouble getting it to run on all 4 cylinders i have also checked ht leads and both coil packs and put a new set of plugs in and still get miss fire on cylinders 4 and 1 i have been told that the vvt pully could need resetting but other then on 1 post in another forum i can not find any information on this and it was in a vauxhall forum so not sure if this would aply to a volvo and if it does how would i do it

I am not a mechanic, but I can say that the VVT system on the Volvo engine is controlled with a pulley, attached to the end of the front cam and driven by the timing belt. The pulley wheel controls a shuttle valve, that in turn, operates the VVT system. It would not cause a cylinder to misfire and cannot be reset. I am sure someone else will be able to offer some more information soon. Good luck and welcome to the forum. Gary

If it was the VVT or the belt a tooth out then how come only 1 & 4 misfire?
It would make ALL four cylinders misfire. I know your not turbo but if you have other plugs in it although new i would change them for Volvo plugs first then if nothing sorted look at the coils as others have said.....but whatever you do start with the cheaper parts first and work more expensive......

The plot keeps thickening vvt puulley was meant to come today but yodel managed to loose it so ended up stripping it all down again starting from scratch and using marks at opposite end of the cams with new spark plugs that i checked gap on myself coil pack swapped round and on first turn of key the engine croaks inti life on cylinders 2&3 so still no change injectors are putting petrol into cylinders but still not fireing. The spark plugs are new and they are sparking possibly at wrong time.

I will have to agree with Gary, asI can't see the VVT causing the misfire. But then again I am not a mechanic...... Wrong timing would make a lot more sense

I can't really see it being the vvt either,they normally just make that horrible noise when they're knackered. As for resetting the vvt,as far as i can make out, they usually go to a set /default position when the engine stops !
Although the timing marks may line up on the cam sprockets, have you checked the crankshaft is in the correct position? Also have you tried swapping( with one another) the coil packs over, if the misfire then happens on 2&3 then it would point to a faulty coil pack ! |

What George said. Coil pack on 4 also does 1. Make sure all leads are right and the connector is secure on the coil.
