Default Srs Airbag Service Urgent And A Dead Dash

A few days ago, whilst driving my S60, everything on the dash went out, speedometer, fuel gauge, clock everything. Later in the day, I started the car, and the dash lights up, everything functioning okay again, but I also got a message "SRS airbag service urgent", first time I'd seen this. After driving a few minutes, the dash goes out again. Later whilst still driving, the dash came back on briefly. Anybody any ideas what could be causing this? The fact that the dash comes on and goes off regularly suggests it's not a fuse, could it be the battery (I've had the car 7 years without a change of battery) or loose connection?

I'm more concerned with the dead dash than the SRS message, I guess that the SRS message though claiming Urgent isn't crucial, unless I get in an accident.

Common fault due to dry solder joints on the chip on the driver information module - the SRS warning is likely to be erroneous.

There's a bloke on here Spotzulik (or similar) fixes them quickly, although you're on the other side of the pond as it where.

In fact, see here http://volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=143579

Thanks for the reply. Is this something that a local mechanic over here might be able to fix? Don't fancy taking the DIM out myself and mailing it back to Blightie.

I see you come from Preston. Before emigrating to Canada, Preston was my home. Haven't been back in 20 years, so I guess it's changed a fair bit. Still miss the pubs though.

A lot of it, especially up Adelphi end is all student accomodation these days.

But most of the rest of it hasn't changed all that much, The pubs off Church st haven't changed much either, although the D&P's been brightened up for the students and doesn't have rows of bikes outside anymore

As to your DIM, you really want to be looking for a good TV or electronics repair shop who can re-flow the solder on the PCB rather than a mechanic.

How easy is it to take out the DIM?

BTW is the Fox & Grapes still around, that used to be my old stomping ground, good pint of Matthew Brown.

Fox and Grapes is still around and I don't think has ever changed, one of my favourites as well.

DIM isn't hard to take out, had mine out recently, but can't for the life of me remember how!

The 10 year check of the air bags is no longer in the Volvo service check, there are posts on here about it.

If you have the right code readers you can reset the SRS light, but they need to be ones designed to work on Volvos.

If the SRS light is on then the air bags won't work in a crash!

You need the DIM re soldering as said , The SRS message came up because it cannot communicate with the warning light due to the DIM problem .. When the DIM is repaired you will need the SRS system code reset with the Volvo VIDA diagnostic machine . There should be big companies where you are which repairs these . Plenty of Volvo's there :-)

Default Volvo XC90 Dead Dash & Resultant warning SRS Airbag Service

Hi, Pulled up to park this week and the dash went dead. Took up to my mechanic and while he was fiddling with fuse above foot pedals (No. 11 I Think) the dash came back to life but shortly afterwards went blank again. Changed fuse from 7.5 to recommended 10 and it seemed to have solved problem. However since the warning message 'SRS-Airbag Service Urgent' has appeared and despite several days of running has not gone away. Can anyone help me. As we only touched the fuse, although it is acknowledged it also covers some or all of the SRS, it should not be a fault with the airbag system!
