So, I bought the unit recommended by 4 x 4, dug out an Android phone and downloaded the app.

I'm still learning how to use it with my 1998 V70 Tdi but so far it's looking very promising. It will read codes from the MSA15.7, the ABS unit and the AW50-42 transmission. I think it will probably read the SRS codes too but I haven't explored that part and don't feel inclined to go poking around in there unless it becomes necessary.

I haven't tried changing anything or clearing fault codes. (none to clear) but I can confirm it will run the dynamic pump timing test successfully, which is the main reason I was interested.

The timing was set by the local Volvo dealer about 3 years ago after I'd sorted out the aftermath of a cambelt failure.

The car is starting well, running well, passing emissions tests and generally behaving itself.

The result from the dynamic timing test is -2.7 degrees measured at a fast idle of 1200 rpm; just outside the spec for an old belt (belt is 3 years and 5,000 miles old).

I doubt it's worth adjusting it but at least now I can easily check it every so often and do something if it gets any worse.

To sum up, it seems useful and is certainly inexpensive. I'm impressed so far.

Thanks for all your comments to date.
