There's a difference between what devices are required to accept, and that's frequently +/- 10% today, used to be -6/+10% yesterday, compared to which tolerances an electricity provider aims at working with.

To be able to keep within +/- 10% at the final end of the wire you have to aim for a tighter tolerance out from the transformers.
Normally the frequency tolerances are much more important to keep. The aim is usually to be better than +/- 1%, although insensitive devices can typically handle +/- 4%.

I spent ages trying to explain that the problem related to the comms between the charger and the car so as to allow intelligent charging. They said they had no way of checking that as they didn't have a smart charger nor any equipment for checking the comms connection at the car's charging port. Wtf?

Thanks again to 'V60 probably' for his kind offer of help.
You're quite welcome.

That sounds like Riverside... They wanted to charge me for a courtesy car whilst mine was in for warranty work, as it was in for three weeks, I'd have paid £315! I take mine to Ray Chapman in Huddersfield, despite the 40 minute journey each way.

It is Riverside. I found Harratts were better when they had the Wakefield franchise.

What you most likely have is an Ohme problem, Volvo will never sort that out. Ohme offer two ways of connecting one sounds a lot like Zappis method which takes the car out of the equation and just controls the charger via Zappi/Octopus apps, the Volvo doesn't get involved, it just waits to see power or it doesn't.
This is my understanding as well - if you are using an Ohme charger with Intelligent Octopus, the charging schedule and whether charging or not is completely controlled by Octopus and Ohme - as far as the car is concerned it's just a dumb charger.

I take it that was the insurance charge? My own insurance specifically covers courtesy cars for me and all named drivers so I always use that for courtesy cars. Maybe mine is unusual though, I don't know.

Yes I believe it was. But that's the only time I've ever been asked to pay anything towards a courtesy/loan car by any dealership, Volvo, Mercedes, BMW, Skoda, SAAB. It just seems petty.

To be honest, I've no idea whether my insurance would cover it, I'm going to check!

EDIT: I checked, I only have third party cover for other cars. Only for me, not named drivers.

Mine is with LV. It covers me 3rd party for driving other cars as yours, however on the certificate under cars covered it states something along the lines of....

- The insured vehicle

- Any vehicle loaned to the policyholder, or named driver, when the vehicle detailed above is in the care of a vehicle repairer for service, repair or MOT.

Charging for insurance seems to be quite common now. Riverside used to be a tenner, then went up to 15 quid a year or so ago, but good on Ray Chapman if they are not charging it. I have heard lots of good stuff about them and I think they have a branch in Bradford too.

I shall have a look at LV, my renewal is next month, thanks for the tip.

I sort of don't mind them charging for a loan car for servicing, but when it's warranty work, I just think it's taking the **** a little. Ray Chapman in Huddersfield (and Bradford) used to be Clive Brooks, with a similar reputation, but I think they were bought last year by Ray Chapman York & Malton. I've been highly delighted with their service over the past year, whereas Riverside, where I bought my car, couldn't seem to care less about customer service and are pretty inflexible, although I understand many are very happy with them.

I have just taken ownership of an XC60 T8.

If Volvo charges for having a courtesy car while the car is being serviced, they are the first make I have owned which does this - all the others would supply a courtesy car free of charge as long as you are prepared to wait longer to get your service booked in.

Even Alfa Romeo many years ago I think gave me free courtesy cars, and their customer service isn't exactly stellar in general.

It's not Volvo charging. It is the dealer, and in this case one dealer in particular. That said I have come across other dealers charging also. Finally it is not charging for the courtesy car. It is charging for the insurance. I always take the car on my insurance and I never pay a penny.
