Another question about price. These meters vary, at least on Ebay, from around £35-£45 to an eye-watering £439! I can't fathom why there should be such a massive difference, though most do seem to be in the lower price range. Would I be better advised to get one from a Volvo specialist than risk unknown quality from Ebay seller?

I got a reconditioned one from Braydon Motors a few years ago for £45; genuine Bosch. Has worked without any problems. Before that my lambda light was on all the time. Whatever you decide to get make sure the Bosch number on your existing unit matches the number quoted on the new one.

The crucial wire that runs through the centre of the sensor is the thickness of a human hair and fragile. This make buying a cheapie from eBay something of a risk in my opinion. About 10 years ago I bought one for £25 and it was no better than the one I was replacing.

Braydons sorted me out a reconditioned one for about £50 - obviously they will be more now.

This is the problem with all this electronic wizardry - at the age that even the newest of this series is reaching most of it is beginning to fail in a way that mechanical parts don't. That's why I have gradually being 'upgrading' to older variants with less electronics.......

Are Braydon normally slow to reply to an enquiry? I've written to them twice in the past and never even had a reply. This time I wrote during the weekend so didn't expect an immediate answer, but I should have thought they would at least acknowledge. People here speak so highly of them so I wonder what they don't like about me!

Write? I just give them a ring and talk to them about what they have on the shelf or in the yard at the moment in terms of 2nd hand parts...........

Just had a quote from Braydon, £260! Are there any cheaper options that are likely to be reliable? I can't understand why there's such a massive difference in price from one supplier to another.

(Edit) I got the price wrong, it's £216. Still a lot of money but I've now spoken to someone there and they might have another option if I email again, so I live in hope!

I have now. It's true that £216 is still less than half the most expensive I've seen and if I can't get anything else I'll just have to bite the bullet. The person I spoke to said just reply to the email and they'll see what they can do.

Thanks to you and Velorum for the replies, all very helpful and constructive.
