Anybody doing this for fun? I wonder about long term impact on transmission.

I did a couple of times. I guess it is only used to go downhill due to engine breaking...
Do you really drive it on L?
Give me a shout when your engine explodes

Wouldn't use it "for fun", but I have used L when required, in all 3 autos I've owned.
I don't think it would have any ill effects on the transmission, let's face it: it was put there to use.

Where I live there are several STEEP hills. Using L is often called for.
I don't slam it into any gear.
It's only on steep downgrades my friends use their paddle shifters.

Seems the only way to get the engine past 2500 rpm. Sometimes an automatic feels a bit boring

The geartronic I've got seems to push the shift point back and back the more I'm depressing the gas. At around 75% it's shifting at around 3,000RPM, 90% close to 4k (in a D5 with the redline at 4,500)

Indeed, the 5 speed works similar when the pedal is depressed. however this means that to get the rpm past 3000 one must accelerate quickly - which is not easy to do in traffic. I'm trying to get the engine to see more revs which helps keep it clean inside - in particular the vvt solenoids which activate past 4000 rpm, I think.
