Default Mysterious oil leak Turbo flow/return? (2012 D5)

Hi all

Mysterious engine oil leak on my V60 D5. There is oil leaking behind the wheel arch liner on the (UK) drivers side. i've investigated and can't seem to find.

It's been suggested that it is a turbo pipe, are they in this location?

Thanks

Callum

My guess (only a guess mind) would be the crank pulley seal. As the engine oil warms up, it gets thinner & passes the seal.

If you take the wheel arch liner off, you should see the auxiliary belt in front of you. The crank is the biggest pulley & there’s a seal behind that.

Oil from the wheel arch liner is usually down to a failed crankshaft seal. It could be something else, but that’s a potential culprit.

Is it definitely oil leaking?

Couldn’t be coming off a CV boot split could it? With water off the road, grease turns oily! CV joints are around the wheel arch liner area, or close to it.

Chaps

Update, after 1000 miles the car needed another 500ml of oil.

I noted oil on the OS engine mount and removed the coolant reservoir to get a look. This is full of OIL!!!

No smoking and have driven 400 miles today. Research tells me this could be a faulty oil cooler/ heat exchanger. hopefully as thats an evening job to fix!

Thoughts please

yes most likely !!
your repair time is way out .. It's going to take you a LONG.LONG time to clean all the oil mayonnaise out . More importantly all the rubber hoses will have absorbed oil , and if you dont change every single one ,then some time in the future when you have forgotton all about it , its going to burst and blow all your coolant out in about 3 seconds , stranding you somewhere awkward.

Seen this several times now in the last 10 years.

Thanks Clan, ballache but better than a head gasket which was my other thought!

Presumably the oil leak is from my coolant reservoir overflow?

Much more used to rallycars, my volvo has been good to me for years!
