Old thread but;
The original alloys on my 2015 Polestar refitted yesterday have very, very slight corrosion; they were on the car since new, only taken off to fit winter wheels and tyres in January this year. The corrosion is where there is little radius ( sharper edges0, so a thin paint film. The winter wheels, brand new Momo ones are showing a lot more corrosion already after only 3 months use ! Diamond cut, the corrosion is near the centre caps. I suspect it's due to the centre bore adaptor rings; allowing water to be retained in the centre bore. I think they must be useless anyhow as the wheel bolt tapers locate the wheel to the hub, so I'll remove them. |

Some years ago my Dad had problems with the diamond cut wheels on his XC90 corroding. Its inevitable where clear powder coat is used, as powder coat really needs the primer coat to adhere properly and for obvious reasons clear powder coat doesnt use the primer.
The wheels were replaced, and the new ones corroded. They were replaced again, and the new ones corroded. In the end the dealer was able to get Volvo to fork out to get the wheels professionally powder coated locally. They didn't quite look like they did originally as the visible diamond cut finish has now gone, but they still looked good and stopped the corrosion problem dead in its tracks. 5 years later they still loom first class. |

I didn't know alloy wheels could corrode until I bought a Volvo
Seriously, I've never seen it on any car I have owned in my life. My V70 came with 4 flaking wheels |

Same with a 2012 one, but they only changed them once; they decided the corrosion on the new wheels after 12 months was "normal". The diamond cut wheels on my old Mondeo ST220 corroded like mad in less than 12 months ( not covered by Ford corrosion warranty!). Yet, the painted Ford RS ones I used for winter tyres did not corrode at all ! |
