Hi from new forum member.Do you want a holiday in Italy + a car to drive home in?
My 2011 s60 r 2.4d auto,197,000m runs fine inc aircon has to come home after nearly a year away at my Italian holiday home .far south near tropea( Google it).my dilemma is the car is mot till Sept so must come back before to uk for another.+ I can not take it back as 'italy' says so.
I have a ferry booked 26 June Sicily palermo to Genoa to get home.BUT if you want an adventure you can buy it for £1500,drive home and keep/sell a very good car.less than car hire!only serious adventurers join this thread.genuine offer .I don't know who else to ask with faith in a starship mileage volvo.must be picked up 24-25 June.

I'm a bit confused why you can't take it back ? You could re-register it and leave it there unless you're selling up and not going back. I understand the Italian road tax might be a bit juicy as it's over 2 litres. If it's a good, reliable car why not leave it there ?

I don't know about post-brexit, I did it with my car and motorbike in Germany, it was pretty straight forward. Get an import test done, get some insurance and register it with the local vehicle authority. They take your details and take the annual usage tax soon after registration. I get Italian admin might be a little bit more 'involved'.

I suspect Italy is similar to Portugal.

A non EU registered car can only be legally driven for a certain amount of time, then it has to be inspected, registered and duties paid to continue use.
The alternative is to return it to the registered country - which is the OP's proposal.

The cost of registering and paying duties on an imported car is just not economically viable - unless it is some form of exotica or has profound sentimental value.

A UK vehicle still has EU documentation in the form of the Certificate of Conformity, that is the recognised vehicle passport across the whole of Europe.

The OP may have more success if some pictures of the car were included.

The Certificate of Conformity is European wide. However, to take a vehicle to Portugal for long term use requires it to be registered with the Portuguese equivalent of DVLA, and an inspection equivalent to an MOT. Import duties are also levied, so given the cost of transporting etc, it is not economically viable. Most folks sell the vehicle in the UK and buy in Portugal. I suspect Italy is similar, hence the OP's plan.
