My local garage I use when I don't have time to do it myself have stopped using a lot of the cheaper aftermarket lines available through motorfactors etc and tend to fit ADL blueprint or similar quality. They have found that most of the cheaper parts especially ball joints and bushes brake discs etc don't last any length of time at all and they end up having to replace them usually free of charge as the customer isn't happy. Fine for getting it through an MOT or if your selling it but you get what you pay for.

OP here.

Thank you all for your help, even though the thread veered off a little into discussion about parts in general.

I would particularly like to thank Alasdair1 for the info which looked promising.

One last thing. Why were there differences in the 740 inner track rods?

Not addressing the op problem but its also a worrying state of affairs when even quality branded automotive parts are no guarantee of quality, counterfeiting is widespread, even F1 have been bitten in the past on fake parts not to mention the medical industry.
Blame free trade instead of fair trade on this problem,,,,,and the usual greed.
I now walk around with a pocket rockwell hardness tester when shopping for parts, lol.

re track rod differences If its anything like the 940 I think it depends on the make of rack that Volvo were using at the time. They seem to have a choice of 3 racks on my 940 depending on the chassis number. It could be a supply issue? or perhaps cost at time of manufacture. Over the years I have come across a lot of parts that seem to change depending on chassis number.

Hope you manage to source some. If your struggling give wannapart.co.uk a call or as previously mentioned braydon Volvo.

They do this on the S60 too.
Some have an SMI rack which is short track rod long track rod end and some are fitted with a ZF rack which is long track rod short track rod end.

I looked all over the rack on mine to try and identify it but couldn't find any reference. I eventually found TRW embossed on the rubber gators that cover the rods.

Alasdair
TRW is your rack manufacturer. Mine has SMI stamped on the boot.
The specification box for each type of rod on the ECP website should have the rack manufacturer to help you decide.

It sounds as is the parts supplier is sending out tie rods to suit a ZF rack. From the measurements you've given you have the earlier type of TRW rack and as such you require p/n 1359347 or aftermarket equivalent.

Hope this helps

Sorry just noticed Alisdair1 has already answered this. Should have read the whole thread.
