Default Automatic handbrake stuck on

So, was driving to the airport yesterday..stopped as some traffic lights near my house and when I went to pull away... Nothing

The handbrake didn't release at biting point.

It didn't release pressing the button (pushing it or pulling it).

It didn't release standing on the break

It didn't release after turning the car on and off again

As I was at a busy junction, I can to drag my car (with the rear drivers side wheel locked) on three wheels to a side street where I will now stay until I get home from holiday

Is there anything I can do, or will it just have to get towed to a garage upon my return?

I had this a while back. The cause of your issue could be different

My offside parking brake motor had a crack in the casing which had obviously been letting in water for some time. The spline which engages the motor with the piston had corroded and finally on application had stripped the splines off so once the handbrake was on it wasn't coming off.

If you have the same problem then it's wheel off, two screws to remove the parking brake motor then manually unwind the piston (T40 bit clockwise).

I replaced both rear callipers with TRW units. These are exactly the same as the Volvo callipers, cost about £190 each and they include the parking brake motor.

Mine happened in a car park so with no tools and Volvo assist showing little interest or ability in being able to do anything it had to get recovered.

I had the same thing happen to my S60. One side of the handbrake wouldn't release (luckily I was in a car park at the time) turns out the caliper had seized and as the handbrake kept trying to release, it damaged the motor too... £850 at Volvo
