V40 Ignition Barrel Gone kapoof!
Hi everyone, hope you are all well.
Today after going to the supermarket and parking the car, I could not take the key out of the ignition or move it as it was stuck on the I position (radio only/no electrics on). I tried turning the wheel and pulling it out to try but to no avail. After fighting with it for a good 15 or so minutes in the boiling hot car I managed to get it out, and decided to try and see if I could put it back in to start the car.... the key now went in with no issue, clicked to I (radio), no problem, clicked to II (electric/ignition) no problem, however it stopped at ignition and did not click any further. I again tried wrestling with it to get it to start but no luck at all. I called my stepfather who tried taking a crack at it and after meddling with it we decided we'd bumpstart the car to get it home. Once we got it home we pulled apart the steering column and discovered that (I believe) the ignition barrel seems to be faulty. With the key in and on the II position - we can take out the starter switch (a small yellow cylinder with a small slit in it) and fit a screwdriver in, twist it, and voila the car starts. I also discovered that repositioning the yellow switch slightly so that the screw for it is just under the mount allows the key to start the car without a screwdriver. Anyways, story aside, does anyone have any similar experience and managed to fix the steering column without having to replace all the locks and keys? I've been looking around and cant find ANYTHING with the same part number except one in the Netherlands for 100eur + shipping, which also means I'd have to replace all the locks on the car and keys. Does anyone know if replacing the keys (and all locks/steering column) allow the car to immediately start using the new key and fob? or will I have to reprogram the immobiliser and alarm/locks so that they work with the new fob? Any information at all that's relevant to this issue would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all |

I have been doing more looking up and if anyone could just confirm if I am correct in the following key points:
If I was to buy a new ignition barrel w/ new locks and matching keys - I Would have to buy the RC Receiver off that same vehicle for it to work in my vehicle (with both the immobiliser and the central locking fob?) I would like to avoid reprogramming anything as I am not currently in a good enough financial state to go over to a Volvo dealer and have this done. These replacement parts alone are already quite a decent financial burden. ---- Edit: I have found another video online demonstrating that it is likely that the failing piece is a small spring inside however it did not go on to explain a long-term solution - Does anyone know if It's possible to find the same ignition barrel/tumbler mechanism and take it apart to replace that one tiny spring? This way I'm hoping I get to keep my current key/fob without spending so much on an entire new mechanism and locks Last edited by Fabi05; Jun 25th, 2024 at 19:00. |
