The ERAD is a motor and a collection of clutches and gears etc.... My understanding is that if the motor is OK (which it sounds it is) then it can be rebuilt with new gears and clutches. This is what was done to my car. The cost was about 3k iirc (will be detailed up thread). Entire ERAD replacement is indeed about 9k but this is the electric motor and the mechanical bits. It sounds to me that you only have mechanical failure. Seeing as your dealer sound like patronising incompetent clowns I would definitely be looking to another dealer. Specifically ask the new dealer if they can do the rebuild and if not then why not. It is the possible saving of over 5k so we'll worth persevering with. Tempting fate here, but mine was rebuilt at 103k miles which is over 70k miles ago now.

Volvo have offered a 60% contribution and confirmed my 40% is only £1,200. I have declined and told them I expect a 100% contribution as it is a known fault on the T8 and has existed for many years. i also reminded them that I notified them of the issue within the warranty period and they said they would not check the engine management software without charging an additional £170 +VAT. Lookers are relaying my message to the manufacturer and I will let you all know how I get on. Fingers crossed. |

I wish I'd read this thread earlier. I have an early 2019 XC60 T8 - and I didn't extend the warranty a couple of months ago. It started juddering, making a loud thunk noise occasionally and not accelerating properly a few days ago. My local Volvo dealer (Endeavour) have said they suspect it is "the clutch for the electric motor" but they can't fit it in for a month and have already said that if it is what they think it is, it will cost "thousands of pounds" to repair.
I bought the car used approved and it only has 36k miles on it now. It has been serviced every year and hasn't given me any issues till now. Any suggestions on alternative dealers, or if I would have any joy contacting Volvo directly? |

Looking at this thread, I am not clear whether this issue has been fixed for new purchased models today? I have just ordered a new 2024 XC60 T8 which seems to be have been sitting in Bristol since I ordered it about a month ago.
Can I look forward to this roulette in 4 years from now or is it fixed? |

They keep saying they’ve fixed it - but the same issue keeps happening…

I would wonder if Volvo knows this and that’s why they are contributing to the repairs? |

After 2 years (22k miles) in the earlier car, the ERAD required some attention from the dealer (some electronic adjustments to the clutch packs and new lubricant and shims on the drive shaft splines) indicating that the 'updated' unit still has some issues. I've just passed the 2 year point (and 24k miles) in the newer ERAD car and I have experienced no issues whatsoever with the ERAD, no odd noises and no calibrations required. When my car was in for service last week, I got them to plug in to the ERAD and check for any fault codes just in case with nothing reported which filled me with confidence towards the newer unit and so far, I have not seen any mention from anyone with the newer ERAD detailing any faults or failures but as these units have only been in service since mid 2022, there is still the possibility that these will start having issues later on but only time will tell.

Hi Can someone help me as How to deal with Volvo on the 100% Goodwill .
My car is registered on 29/05/2019 and I purchased the car from the Volvo Dealer in Dundee Scotland on 30/09/2022 with the mileage on 27700 and the current mileage on the car is 35374 and I have the ERAD issue encountered since 20/12/2023 and I have a service due in May2024 there TMS volvo Coventry confirmed the fault with ERAD. My manufacture warranty expired on 30/09/2023 and I have been servicing my vehicle with Volvo dealer all the time. I reached out to Volvo Customer service team about this and they are offering 55% Goodwill to be used within 30 days and the total cost for ERAD is £7210.Even after 55% Goodwill it is too expensive for me as I have not done much mileage on the car and this issue is happening to many others as well looking into the forum. Please advice as how to proceed this matter. Many Thanks. Timothy |

However, even with a 'known problem' (not that Volvo will ever 100% acknowledge its a known issue) diagnosed once the warranty period is expired, 55% seems a pretty decent offer from them as they could quite easily have washed their hands of it completely. Had the car not been serviced at a Volvo dealership after the warranty had expired, its likely they would have offered you below 55% or even zero. I feel you could battle this through the Motor Ombudsman but it will likely be a lengthy process and you may well end up with a bigger bill at the end of it. Good luck.
