Exclamation V50 2.0D turbo replacement

Just looking to replace the turbo on 2006 2.0 D V50

I have no turbo spool anywhere in the rev range and am looking to replace the whole unit - does anyone know how do to this or link me to a thread as I've had a good look around! The car is now 10 years old and I know that turbos eventually stop working - I am good with a spanner so happy to work just need some heads up!

Hi
Might be worth checking the vacuum system first. After a service I had no turbo at all. I found the garage had knocked one of the vacuum pipes near the oil filter. There are numerous pipes and a couple of solenoids. Worth checking first

Is this the small diameter hoses (approx 10mm) that run all over the place or larger 40mm ones? It has just come back from having coolant and oil hoses replaced but was fine for a couple of drives. Thanks!

Hi
Just the small ones. The vacuum controls the variable vanes on the turbo I believe, via a solenoid. The hoses soften a bit with age and can be pulled of when other work is being carried out, or just come off.
I bought a new solenoid with hoses so changed most on mine. It is cheaper to buy the solenoid and hoses than the solenoid on its own for some reason.
Or you could just buy hose by the metre if they need replacing.

I have wasted a day taking out a turbo only to find it spins fine on the bench. Have you run the engine with the turbo to engine pipe removed? Just to see if it's actually pumping air or not?

In my case I jumped to the conclusion that my very high mileage V50 would need a turbo but actually is was the pesky air mass sensor again.

If it is the turbo it's a nuts and bolts job. Not hard but a bit hidden behind the engine.

Did you manage to find a how to on this? I know it was quite a while ago now, don't suppose you remember how you done it?

My turbo needs replacing and finding the step by step isn't proving easy. I'm no mechanic but prefer to try things myself before spending loads at the garage.
