If it's the renault gearbox, reverse will be next to first gear. Lift the collar on the gear lever push to left then forward to engage reverse.

I had the problem fixed by the Volvo dealer. I negotiated with them, initially they stuck to their diagnoses of gearbox removal and all, for close to a grand but I mentioned the opinion of various experts (like here) whom I had consulted with, and they eventually apologized and agreed to fix it for 100 , lol.
But they asked me to provide the original part which noone at Volvo could get . I eventually got an aftermarket cylinder in the Netherlands for 40 euros shipped.

However once I picked up the car, I noticed on the way back (highway) a huge jolt when shifting to 4 and especially 5th gear. On subsequent trips, this was no longer noticed. Any idea what may have happened ? The clutch pedal felt hard too, not sure if it was just an impression. Would that be a matter of the system needing to be broken in ? They replaced just the cylinder and refilled the system. I was about to go back to the garage to ask them to look at it again, but now I am wondering if I should let them know, in case the issue comes back with a vengeance later on.
