A solution to broken keys
About 30 years ago, I got fed up with having to buy ever more keys as they broke. After much head scratching I did a minor modification to the barrel. As you can see in the photo, I carefully drilled a small hole (1/16in if I remember correctly) into the barrel and then glued in the end of the drill bit (that I had cut off after drilling the hole). Never had a key break since and avoided having to install an additional push button.
The other thing I wanted was electronic ignition (Sparkright at the time and still running strong). However, the Amazon ignition switch disables all electrics when starting apart from the coil (and starter solenoid, obviously) so I could not power the Spartright from the ignition switch. I cut into the thin steel cover at the back of the coil (where the armoured cable enters) and soldered another wire to the wire that comes through the armoured cable. This solves the problem of getting power whether cranking or running.
