Default Airbag warning!

So yesterday I got a message on my '09 XC70 that urgent airbag service is required. I drove from work to the grocery store and when I started it up again, the message was gone and the airbag light was off again. Do you all think this is a one off glitch? Or should I take the safe route and pay the $$ to get it checked out? For now I'm just waiting to see if it happens again.

Sadly it's called gambling. In your case you would possibly be betting your life against the cost of a scan.

Sometimes airbag warnings can apply to pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners. The XC70 is an inherently safe car which will protect you from almost all outside threats but if the belt tensioners or an airbag fails you could get killed by being thrown forwards.

This is why it it worth investing in your own Volvo VIDA/DiCE clone set up to do your own checking. You should be able to put it together with an old laptop upon which to run it for about £120. Well worth having if you intend keeping the car for any length of time.

Actually I'm wondering if I have some electrical glitch going on. Yesterday it started normally, then shut down, showing an Immobilizer On, Try start again message. It was absolutely fine after that. Cleaned and tightened the battery terminals so I'll see how it goes from there

It would still be worthwhile investing in a VIDA/DiCE clone and an old laptop.

Personally, if you don’t get the message again I would wait until the next service and get it checked. If you got the error, there will be a code stored until it is cleared.

Whilst in principle you should have any fault with a safety system looked at promptly, if it was a serious issue the message would persist until the fault code memory was cleared. With minor issues the car will stop showing the message if it clears. It is safe to assumed if the warning light and message have gone, the system is working as it should.

I had the same message come up on my wife's 2017 V40 - it would come up for a while, then go, then reappear a few days later. I bit the bullet and took it to my local Volvo service agent for diagnostics (too recent for my VIDA/DiCE) and it turned out to be a faulty connector in the B pillar air bag connector - a wire had come out and was intermittently making contact. D*mn good thing I got it checked.

you might have water in the CEM there was a modification kit back then to fit 2 new top plugs and waterproofing cover over the CEM.
