Default Lost power when towing, now barely running

Hey all. I've got a problem with my 2006 2.0D. A couple of weeks ago I was towing an unusually heavy load with it, and it handled the job like a champ - no hesitations, plenty of torque etc. Arriving home after a couple of hours/75 mile journey, and going up a reasonably steep hill, the car started losing power/juddering/and a lot of noise from the engine. From memory this was at about 1500-2000 RPM - the noise on this occasion was exactly the same as the video I'm about to share below.

This was a couple of weeks ago, I didn't use the car since then as I assumed it was broken and needed looking at. Came to look at it this morning and everything seemed fine. Took it out for a test run, trying to force the issue, and maybe noticed 1 or 2 *tiny* hesitations, so small that I'm questioning if I did or not. I was out for 15-20 mins. Got back home, and was letting the car idle, and after a while I noticed occasionally the EGR would randomly click, which would coincide with a drop in RPM. It did it once so bad that the engine stalled. I had VIDA plugged in and the only thing it was saying was glow plug relay faulty.

I thought OK, will take it round to the workshop and have a look at the EGR, and upon driving round to the other side of the house the issue started again, just like when I was towing. I had to keep the revs high to even get it into the shop without it cutting out.

Took the EGR off and cleaned it (it honestly wasn't bad), and put it all back together over the course of the day, so the engine had cooled down a lot by the time I got back to it, and now the thing won't even idle and sounds terrible, and there's also some strange behaviour with the engine management and glow plug lights before starting (which coincides with clicking from the engine bay).

Here's a video: https://youtube.com/shorts/5RbeqnELJyo?feature=share
Note I'm not pressing the gas at all, that's just it trying to idle.

Any ideas?

As a follow on, I went back to it yesterday afternoon, and it was back to running as normal. Initially there was a period where the turbo wasn't kicking in, but after a while it came back and now it all seems to be running fine.

I cleared the codes to see what would come back and there's nothing 🤷*♂️

Not sure where to go from here as it obviously has a significant intermittent issue which makes me not want to use the car!
