Update: Found the STH solenoid was bad in the gearbox, that's the one that regulates the pressure. It was open circuit...
They are impossible to find new, so I got a used gearbox and swapped the solenoid, to see if that was all that was needed. I replaced the SL solenoid also, as that didn't make a clicking noise when tested, but that turned out to be a red-herring.
I also fitted some LEDs to to the solenoid outputs and made a rudimentary panel so I could see the states of these as the TCM sent signals.
Test drive seemed better, but when pushed the gearbox started to slip and get hot again, just not as bad as before.
Conclusion, the clutches are all burnt up as it has been slipping under low pressure for longer than I have owned the car.
So... I am now swapping the entire box, and putting the "good" solenoid back in the original gearbox. Big job! Hoped replacing the entire drivetrain in my Jeep was the last time I have to do this. But at least I have trans jack etc still.
Most bits are off, just about to move the starter, to get at the torque converter bolts, and it looks like a bit of a pig....

I also have a question, there looks to be an oil leak at the back of the engine, just below the cylinder head. Apart from the head gasket, what else is there? The end of the cams feel dry and the rocker cover isn't leaking, from what I can see.
I should be able to see better when the gearbox is out, so will post pictures if I can get some.
