Default Prop centre bearing failure in 1500 miles

Dear chums,

I undertook the task of changing the prop centre bearing and rubber less than 1500 miles ago.

I was very careful to do all the 'tricks' such as marking the prop to make sure it all went back together balanced. I was very gentle pressing the bearing on. I did the carrier bolts up sequentially.

I was a bit suspect about the quality of the rubber as it had a lot of 'casting' tags on the inside which I removed. Sadly the bearing was made in the same fashion it seems.

Bought from PFS. Maintaining a 940 is getting hard. Water pumps are crap. Prop centre bearings are crap. Most caps and arms are crap.

Demoralising.

Two very good suppliers of bearings:~
Order from the code stamped on the body or by size.
You can also choose the manufacturer & price range.
Bob.

Best one I've found so far is Meyle carrier and self bearing.

The original 183265 bearings are SKF 6009-2RS1/LT10 according to volvopartswebstore and a NOS one on ebay. Looks like they're available here, assuming that's a legit site. Simply Bearings that Bob linked to don't list them, but they might be able to get hold of them?

Other ones are substituted for it like 6009-2RS1/C3 and /C3GJN. Not sure if it makes a difference but it probably does:
  • The bore, diameter and width of C3 bearings are identical to the none C3 version.
  • C3 are exactly the same quality but have a different a purpose.
  • C3 bearings have additional internal radial clearances to allow expansion in high speed / temperature environments.
  • Typically suited to hot and high speed environments ( fans, high speed motors etc)
  • They can feel loose until at running temperature and speed.
  • They are unsuitable where critical alignment is required from the onset..
  • Unless the bearing you are replacing specifically says C3 on it then you should not replace it with a C3 bearing.
  • A rule of thumb is to replace like for like, there is no advantage to a C3 bearing in place of a standard bearing.

With the carriers it's a crapshoot. You've got Meyle, Febi, or random no name brands on ebay. I think Luke said he purchased a Volvo one but it was a Febi Bilstein one in the box.

To make the carriers last longer, maybe filling the remaining void with Polyurethane Casting Rubber would help with longevity. I'm going to do that although it's to fix a vibration. Yoshifab sell them like so:

The febi bilstein ones are made of cheese and failed after about the same mileage as Foeux's PPS one has.

The genuine Volvo one was Meyle in a Volvo bag, it is noticeably stiffer than the febi one and so far is holding up well with the skf bearing I bought & pushed in to it. The skf bearings are made in Italy but the meyle carrier is Chinese which doesn't fill me with a lot of hope but fingers crossed China can actually make one thing that is decent.

If this one fails I'll be buying yoshifabs polyurethane ones that I discovered after forking out stupid money for the Volvo one.

I bought a cheapo water pump for my 940 and it didn't last long enough for the thermostat to open... Why bother manufacturing this rubbish?

Because the people making them in China never meet the end user and might not even have been taught to work properly or give a hoot (I know I wouldn't for £1.50.an hour). It.is a victimless crime to make.something awful.

We have do direct.link.to.the factories and people making.the crap components. If.they are rubbish, we get a refund or worse still, don't say a word and because they cost nothing, it doesn't matter anyway.

I need to do this soon.
I think a problem might be a build up of faulty parts in stockist that have just purchased job lots , have no return option and just keep sending them out until they are not returned.

I'm still on mostly factory parts, used factory parts or Volvo stock items bought 15+ years ago, and a few aftermark electrical an bushes. Thinking about a PS pump and centre bearing, fingers crossed!

Having a parts car was real useful but I've used that up now.
