Default Oil quantity

Evening all
A very quick question, as I can't get Vida to open up. About to order oil for the next service on my XC90 - is it 5.4l I need (also changing the filter)?

Car is a 2009 D5. Have done it enough times and should remember by now, but don't want to be short once it's drained out!

Thanks in advance

If you buy 6 litres you will have enough with a bit left for topping up if needed.

I read 6.5L somewhere. But I've since lost it.

I bought 2x5L. I poured one bottle in, then meticulously added 1.5L with the wife's kitchen jug. She got over it.

I had changed the filter, so that will have taken some, but it was just barely enough to reach the bottom of the hatched area on the stick. I've since topped up by eye.

I don't think 5.4L will be anywhere near enough. Mine's a 2004, might it be different?

5.7 litres, if memory serves me right on a euro 4 engine. Older engines (euro 3's) took more oil, newer engines don't.

Just be aware that you don't fill the oil to the max mark on the dipstick in these newer engines (well, the newer stuff doesn't even have a dipstick!). 3/4 of the dipstick (you'll still have one) is correct in this scenario. Older engines could be filled to "max" on the dipstick, but not yours.

If you add too much oil (more than 3/4 on the dipstick) on a euro 4 engine, its possible you'll get a warning light. 5.7L is the right amount if I recall correctly for your particular car.

Oh, make sure the oil is the correct spec too (A5/B5). This will keep the engine/DPF happy.

Perfect, thanks everyone. Ordered and set up to do at the weekend. I fill to half way between min and max, and keep an eye on it every few weeks or so.

Used to use the Castrol branded oil for my C30 D5, but switched to Volvo branded spec oil in this one (2009 XC90 D5).
