Default V40 2017 oil consumption

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Volvo v40 2017 D2 from a motor trader. Mileage is 100k. EML started coming up due to clogged EGR within a week and then began to notice the oil consumption, the car is consuming around 1L per 1000 miles (which I will do in a week and a half mostly motorway). Had it diagnosed by Volvo specialist who advised it required rebuild due to pistons and rings issue. Seller has offered refund or rebuild of the engine. My question is how likely is it that the problem will be sorted permanently with the upgraded parts, i really like the car but due to the miles I drive I need something reliable. Also which parts are required to be changed during the rebuild to prevent reoccurrence.

Also I thought this issue was supposed to be resolved by 2015…clearly not

Thanks

Hi The oil consumption problem that affects the vea engines was supposed to have been resolved from about mid 2016 with redesigned pistons and rings
However if this car is using oil now and has egr problems then best advice is don't walk away , RUN.
If the dealer is willing to refund then take it and buy something that doesn't have problems from the off.
Engine rebuild might sound like a good idea but the quality of the rebuild will depend on who is paying
As I said take the money and run

In that case would you recommend staying away from the VEA block altogether then as it’s not clear when the upgrades have been made or if they even work to solve the issues?
All the other ULEZ compliant Volvos are out of my price range so it looks like I will have to look at a different brand unfortunately.

2018 and onwards is where you want to be, but even then some higher milers are now showing signs of oil consumption.

You could always go for a petrol, they don’t seem so bad over here in the UK. In America however they have also been burning oil like crazy so maybe not the best advise either.

But as said, return the car and get something else. That is sound advise. The rebuild quality depends on who is doing it, and who is paying for it. There are a lot of parts involved and to do it properly gets expensive very quickly!

The vea engines do have their problems, the oil consumption problem was mainly due to the design of the oil control rings and short journeys , there is also a problem with the poor design of the egr coolers causing the units to soot up and cause poor running . Volvo went through a lot of warranty work on this problem . Cleaning the egr valve and cooler really has to be added to the regular maintenance list probably every 50- 60 k miles
I think that most manufacturers have had problems with their diesel engines going to Euro 6
Yours is the first volvo vea engined car post 2017 that I have heard of using oil in such quantities, my own personal opinion is that a modern engine should not use oil between services at all . I am guessing that the car has not been very well looked after .
Hope you are eventually successful in whatever car you buy but definately say goodbye to this one

I'd take the refund and walk away.

Best of luck searching for another car.

Volvo redesigned the piston oil control rings and introduced that change in 2016 from engine number 1501327

It does seem then that despite the change the issue can still occur
I think I am going to have to take the advice on here sadly and look for another car
