Soon to pick up new XC60 T8 Ultimate.
What are your thoughts on whether to purchase and extended service plan? I was kind of planning to do this - my only reservation is whether if they already have my money in advance and I have avoided future price rises, will they skimp on the actual servicing work and just give the car the once over instead? For the car this pricey I want to make sure that it is correctly serviced with oil change or whatever else should be needed. Same question for the extended warranty - I am not sure whether I have to choose that already when I buy the car or only when the normal warranty expires? Should I get that as well? |

I would say service plan yes, warranty no. You should get a letter when the car is nearly three years old offering the extended warranty then.

Just picked up my XC60 T8 Ultimate, and I did purchase the 3 year service plan.
Based on a few years good experience, including servicing, I trust the dealership. This is the main criteria for me. You may need warranty work as well as normal servicing (although that is covered so is not an issue, just that it puts the normal future servicing on the same basis). The cost is a small part of the overall cost, but you do need to make sure you are happy. One downside is if you sell the car before the service plan has expired, the plan goes with the car, so no refund. My previous car was sold after 2 years of the 3 year service plan, but the final year went with it. I appreciate the peace of mind of not worrying about any service cost, and just find it easier all round. I'm not sure that is reason enough to buy it though. I suppose that I feel the car is a luxury car (certainly for me) and think that adding the service plan makes ownership simpler. I would say again, you need be confident about your dealership.

Marshalls Volvo tried this on with me, turned out to be a marshall warranty, the generic policy document for many of their brands of dealer networks. I don't trust these generic warranties. I did a 5 year service plan when new back in 2020 before COVID, best thing I ever did, it's been zero cost after the initial £425 upfront cost, and Volvo services are expensive. You can rock up to any Volvo dealer and get it serviced under the plan, they just look up your reg number and find it on the main dealer systems. I would do service plan for as many years as they will offer, and contact Volvo directly to extend warranty on a yearly basis when you get to near year 3 end. Apropos the service plan, whether it's worthwhile depends to some extent on pricing and whether Volvo has an offer on the service plan. If so it becomes something of a no-brainer. If not then you are just paying for servicing in advance.
The dealer won't skimp on the service work; even if the plan is on offer the dealer will be paid more or less the 'normal' price by Volvo for the work. I wouldn't run one of these cars without a warranty; when things go wrong costs can get very expensive, very quickly. For example, price of a new LED headlight is approximately £1300 (gulp!). No need to purchase the extended warranty now; wait until the 3 years or 60,000 miles is up and purchase it then.

If its the Volvo service plan at a very good price then take it. When we purchased our 1 year old XC90 the dealer offered a service plan, however it was a dealer plan not the Volvo one, the cost was over £2700 for 4 years servicing - you could pay monthly which attracted a small fee.
I didn't take up the offer as when I got the Volvo app loaded and checked the subscriptions the car had 3 remaining services left on a Volvo plan so yes I had gained from someone else expense but if you plan to keep the car the discounted Volvo plans are worth it. Our 3 year warranty expires in September, the cost of another years Volvo warranty is £595, Which is a lot of money but still far cheaper than changing the car just stay in warranty. We had Hyundai's for many years so usually changed the cars when 5 years old. |
