No Nothing ! , just those which may have come about by age and neglect over the years. There is a chance you have bought someone else's problems though.

Hi Mark, 2 series cars are on the whole very simple, robust, over engineered and reliable.

That said, the youngest is now over 30 years old, and the oldest 50. Since even good quality Swedish steel will rust out eventually, your main concern will be to keep on top of corrosion. As my now long departed Mum would say, 'a stitch in time saves nine'; a good mantra to keep in mind for your Volvo.

Mechanically, they hate cheap plugs and points. Always fit top quality items. Carburettor diaphragms can fail as well - I always carried a spare. Prop shaft joints (U/Js) and petrol pumps can also be problematic if neglected. Likewise the handbrake, which is a small drum incorporated in the rear disc. They need to be kept well adjusted and lubricated if they are not to seize. That's off the top of my head, I'm sure others will be able to add more.

Whilst writing, may I point you towards Alan (Othen)'s excellent and comprehensive thread about his 240s - the 'Barge' and the 'Royal Barge'. Have a read through that - Alan even produced an index to facilitate quick and easy searching - and you will not go far wrong.

Regards, John.

Hi Mark,

John is very generous with his praise in the above. In case it is useful to you, here is a link to the thread covering the Royal Barge (a 1980 244 GL) and the Barge (a 1983 GLE):

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=303259

The most expensive problem to fix will be rust - mainly in the rear end (rear wheel arches, boot floor, spare wheel cavities and sills). Fortunately both the RB and the Barge were pretty sound in this respect, but lots of interesting stuff came up during my ownership of both motor cars.

Good fortune,

Alan
