Default Boot handle not releasing lock

Evening,

The boot of my 2010 XC90 won't open when I pull the handle.
I've read about the rusty bar and while ours is rusty, I don't believe that is the issue.
I was able to prize it open following the video posted here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV-ekLNV60)

Now that I have the boot open I can see when the handle is out (i.e. not trying to open the boot) the cable wire is pulled up. (handle_set_to_close_lever_up.jpg)

Then when I pull the handle, the cable wire is feed in (handle_set_to_open_level_down.jpg ) but the lock doesn't release.
I've oiled around the cable and locking mechanism and worked the lock from the inside, using a screw driver and bar to force down the cable holder. (using_screw_driver_to_force_down_lever.jpg)

Now the boot opens from the outside......just. I'm wondering if anyone had this issue before and do I need to do more work to the locking mechanism.

P.S - Tried to take the locking mechanism out but the tork screw now has a damaged head (Damaged_head.jpg) I'd appreciate any tips how I could get it turned (I'm thinking grinding the sides a bit to get a vice grips to turn it)

The release cable is clearly stretched and wrecked (you can see at least two broken strands). I'd be replacing that before it lets go completely.

As for the torx head bolt, if it were me, I'd be investing in a decent set of screw/bolt extractors rather than risk damaging anything else.
