the tyre size sounds about right, but it depends on the offset of the alloys, i belive the s40/v40 needs a 7 /7.5 j offset, do you have a make and model of the rims you are looking at?
I have 17s on mine and i know there are peeps with 18 and 19 inch rims on an s40

7 or 7.5j is the rim width - not the offset (usually referred to as 'ET') which is the distance from the centre line of the rim to the bolt flange face. This can be a +ve (most FWD cars) or -ve number (older RWD's and 4x4's etc.). With the wrong offset, tyres could foul on the wheel arch or on the inner wing or strut. Offset varies with wheel width, so whilst an offset of (for example) ET35 might be correct for a 5.5" rim, it will not be the same for a 7" rim.

For as S40 I think the offset is in the range ET35 to ET42.

the biggist size tyres you can get on are 215-45-17 i have tryed 215-50-17 but rub. just look on any tyre manufacture site and see what the OD of the tyres are and mach them for 18s or what ever you want but 205/40/17 will fit no prob.
