Red face loss of gear selector

As a 97 v40 owner that has just had to diagnose running problems and a miss fire i was quite happy to finally track down the problem to a faulty coil pack and poor plugs
However imagine my frustration when i then lost reverse gear selection
my first place to look was the lower selector lever rubber and plastic bush that had melted into a big stringy mess , The bush that is near to the cat converter had been melted by the extreme heat from the cat when it was being heated red hot by un burnt fuel causing loss of correct gear selection so there you go a missfire can cause bad gear selection worth remembering

I should have your emissions tested if I were you to make sure no damage has been done to your cat due to the severe over heating.
