Default 2001 1.9 turbo diesel Overheating

Hi every one,

Looking for a bit of advice on my overheating V40. There was never great heat inside cabin. Two weeks ago while town driving cabin heater blowing cold temp gauge in red, Added coolant and waited. Car ran fine and I got it home. Replaced thermostat, in morning cold start to motorway driving, after 3miles cabin cold and temp gauge in red. AT 120Kph free wheel, temp gauge returns to normal, cabin temp gets hot. Car runs well for 80km, back in slow moving traffic it happens again cabin heater blowing cold temp gauge in red. Again free wheel, temp gauge returns to normal, cabin temp gets hot. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks
I can and do a lot under the bonnet.

My '98 TD developed similar problems after I replaced the coolant fluid when I first got the car.

I assume it was down to trapped air in the system because the fluid level would drop slightly every now and then but I couldn't see any signs of fluid loss. Also the engine temp gauge wouldn't go as near to the red when I topped up after this happened.

After a few weeks the engine temp stabilised at mid way on the gauge and not had to top up the fluid in ages now.

From what I've heard, the engine is notoriously difficult to get the fluid in without getting air trapped somewhere in the system.

Default Update on overheating

2001 V40 diesel. No power on cold start engine has to run for 10 -15 minutes while I rev it up. As it heats up I release the pleasure in radiator hose. Car runs like a dream until I switch off the engine have to wait a minute or two to get the power back in it. Was told it maybe the cylinder head gasket.

Thanks for any help.
