This is my first thread and is a cry for help.
Due to an undiagnosed waterpump problem my well loved motor is now leaking coolant from a cylinder head crack just below one of the plug recesses.
The engine still runs and does not throw out white water vapour from the exhaust.
Can anyone offer advice/comments etc. on how difficult or practical it is to replace the cylinder head on this B230E fuel injected engine?
I am aware that in today's market a fully functional 240GLT saloon is only worth a few hundred pounds but this car deserves much more than a trip to the knackers yard.
Any comments welcome.

Hi Geoff,

Welcome to the forum!

As for the car, don't panic and don't scrap it!

Finding a good used cylinder head should not be difficult. Fitting it is not a big job - DIY if you are fairly handy, or not too much cash if you know a proper mechanic.

I can't recommend anyone down your way, but it's not specialised work, so any reputable garage or mechanic should be able to tackle it.

For the cylinder head, try a wanted ad on this forum in the 240 sales and wants section.

Best wishes, let us know how you go on.

John

Replacing the head is quite simple and will only take a couple of hours for a mechanic. Getting a replacement shouldn't be cheap either.

Where's Speen anyway?

I think Morsing meant 'should be cheap'. There are a number of scrap car dealers that operate on-line that may be able to source your cylinder head. I have used some in the past and they were ok admittedly not for something so large. Others on here may be able to suggest potential suppliers. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Stick a new cylinder head on it, I have a cylinder head from my old 240 GLT you could have for a small sum, say £30 or so. It has about 110K on it. It's missing the cam, and I've had the shims out of the tappets but you could get all these parts off the old head. I could supply a cam also, but it wouldn't be the 'correct' cam for the B230E. (I have T and M cams spare, the V cam from this head is currently propelling my B200F to greater things )

Thanks for your input Morsing.
We are almost neighbours if you are in Aylesbury - Speen is between Princes Risborough and High Wycombe.
You indicate a head change is quite easy - do you have experience with this engine?

Thanks for your encouragement and your offer - I am certainly warming to this challenge.
As an obvious seasoned performer, how much more difficult is it to change the cam as well?
Sorry I can't pm you - I would certainly like to discuss.
