The pipe you refer to is the main coolant pipe from the water pump, not sure which way it flows, but coolant, not oil inside.

You need to get the block cleaned up and then have another look.

Well thanks for the replies everyone. We'll try to get that mess cleaned up and go from there. I'll make sure to get some more pictures once that's done and hopefully we can diagnose from there.

Use a true engine degreaser product instead of brake cleaner or other. It's amazing how quickly that stuff dries everything out. Just apply and scrub a bit with A bristle brush and spray off with low pressure water hose. Make sure you wear eye and hand protection though. It is evil stuff. That and make sure you have a container to catch all the crap. You don't want that stufff sitting in your drive.

Figured I'd post here since it's been some time and there doesn't seem to be any other leaks.

IIRC it ended up being a camshaft seal (kinda like this one here)and we had that replaced.

Default 2001 v40 1.9t vvt oil leak

My 2001 V40 1.9t is leaking oil from the variable value timing. Can i stop the leak without removing the whole thing and replacing the o-ring? which from my understanding is not necessary? I have checked the Positive crankshaft ventilation with the glove over the oil cap and it had inward suction. I removed all the housing and video taped the oil coming from the vvt. It is just a lot of work for a $5.19 o-ring? I paid a $1000 for the car for my 16 year old son, it runs good just leaves a trail of oil across town and a puddle in the driveway. We have to add 2 quarts every other fill up.

I have heard that you can add brake fluid to engine oil to make the gaskets swell up and stop a leak?
or add some really fine saw dust? anyone had any success with either of these methods?
if no cheap easy fix i have a wonderful white volvo for sale?
