Right guys, I’ve had another look at the tyres which are on the car at the moment and they are a bit of a mish mash of brands, having said that they are all rated at 95Y, they are not Cross Season tyres which is what I want to replace them with.
As Sotosound pointed out, I found a plate on the B pillar stating the tyre size as 235/40 R18 so that is what I will go with. I also found another plate giving a max gross weight of 2300kg Ok as far as Y rating goes, according to a speed rating chart it’s good for up to 186 mph and since the UK national speed limit is 70mph and going down to 20mph in places, I will never achieve 186 mph even if the car is capable of it. W is up to 168mph so I would think either Y or W will do. The load index chart states 95 is good for a maximum load of 690 kg a tyre so 95 or above rating should be ok. Kev0607 mentioned a size 245/40ZR18 96Y 8Jx18 rim ET55 offset, but 245 doesn’t match what’s on the car at the moment, neither does it match what’s on the B pillar plate so I may give that size a miss and stick with what it says on the tin. |

Agreed... Go with what the B pillar sticker says for the size. As for the top speeds, as you say, you'll never get to them (not in a V70 anyway). Either W or Y rated are fine, but in addition, consider getting an XL tyre. V70's are a heavy car.

Hi Kev
Many thanks for your reply yes, I was thinking of the XL ones. I’ve been checking around on the internet for some Goodyear Vector 4 Season G3 (W) and trying to find them in the 235/40/18 is the devil’s own work. Having looked on www.autoexpress.co.uk/product-group-tests they seemed to have come out quite favourable. I’m not so keen on the tyre pattern on the Vredestein All Season (W) although they were runners up. |

Hi Clive,
As simboc mentioned earlier in this thread, try Black Circles. Its a good site to compare tyres and there's fitting options available. www.blackcircles.com

I have the Cobtinental Allseason Contacts (current model) and am honestly really happy. I used to change tires (winter and summers separately) but don't notice much difference. The only 'mini' downside would be grip on ice. I mean, no tire really has any grip on ice. The Contis are a tad behind my previous dedicated winter tires (Hankook Icept something something). The Contis are quiet, grippy on dry roads, grippy on wet roads and grippy on snow. Had no isses at all. Okay, my suspension is now all brand new and the car has been for a proper alignment, so that is all fine.

Theoretically, being in the UK, you can get away with T rated tires. T being a Vmax of 190 kph (so like 115 mph). I doubt you'll be exceeding that. I have Vs, as I can hot the vehicles Vmax any time on our Autobahn system. But the V70 isn't happy at speeds greater than 100 mph.
