It is the proper belt though. Volvo catalogue points to this same one.

To my knowledge there are only 2 belts for AC and power steering depending if you have the full hydraulic power steering or the electric assisted power steering.

The thicker 5PK is for the hydraulic and the 3PK for electro hydraulic. Both belts are the same 628 length.

Are you sure there is no difference in either the AC or power steering pump. It could have had replacements at some time? Have you found why the belt failed in the first place?

Have you photos?

The belt was probably never replaced before which is why it snapped. It was in a very rough shape.

I've contacted a Volvo service, based on their information both the PS and AC pulleys are the right diameter, same that I've found in other sources. They couldn't really say anything useful, they've never seen such an issue.

Weird...

Hi bAdam

The belt I used was Gates Micro V stretch 3PK628SF and as far as being slack was concerned, I had to start it on by one rib and then wind it on by turning the lower pulley using a socket and ratchet and it was as tight as merry hell.

Clan mentioned about nicking the belt but I decided to take a chance and it’s been on since December 2023, so I will continue to wait and see.

If the aircon stopped working it wouldn’t be the end of the world and yes, I’ve driven a car when the power steering packed up, just so I could get it back home to work on.

I bought Gates Belts from Parts in Motion over here in the UK with no issues.

If yours is slack, then there has to be something going on with:

The pulley diameters, you could measure the diameters just to be sure.

The pulley centres, although I don’t think they would be altered, or you have the wrong belt.
I’d measure the circumference of the belt to see if measures 628mm, never mind what it says on the packaging.
I’ve bought parts from main agents in the past only to find the box has the correct part number and the wrong part inside, it can happen.

I’d be very interested in knowing what the final outcome is, maybe you will keep everyone posted.

Good luck
