If this is the case, what was the figure your MAP sensor was reporting and more importantly, what should it have been?

Black smoke, oil on intercooler and whistle
Hi guys first time posting, I have just bought a 2005 s60 d5 and am currently having some problems if anybody can help. I have a hissing noise under acceleration when the turbos are winding up which I believe may be a split hose somewhere but at around 2000rpm I have a large cloud of black smoke from the exhaust. I have looked at the intercooler this morning doesn’t appear to be bowed but I do have a bit of oil on the bottom of the intercooler. Could this be a split intercooler pipe or does it sound like the intercooler needs replacing ? Thanks in advance for any help.

Those symptoms definitely indicate a boost leak and oil at the bottom of the intercooler is highly indicative of it being faulty but it would be wise to thoroughly check all other hoses and pipes associated , particularly the orange seals which are located at each end of the Resonator box which attaches to the Turbo. In addition, if yours is a Euro 4 185 engine with a DPF, running it like this is highly likely to have an adverse effect on the DPF and the Soot Filter Full message may well appear. A new intercooler is not massively expensive and is very much a DIY job .

Thanks mate im not sure if it has a dpf on this car but i have been getting the high emission service light on the dash, i thought it may of been dpf so went for a run down the motorway to try and clear it up but i think it may of made the boost leak worse as the intercooler was clean until i came out this morning to find oil on the bottom will i be ok driving it gently for a short period (not let the turbo wind up) ? Just until i get paid and can buy the parts, or is this a park up and do not drive situation ?

A quick indicator to whether you have a dpf or not is the colour of the plastic engine cover.
Black is Euro 3 and NO DPF. Grey is Euro 4 with DPF. The euro 3 will cause less of an issue with a boost leak but obviously with either engine, get sorted as soon as you can. Hope this helps.

If the car has been mollycoddled for months or years, you can get a build up of soot/carbon which will get blown out with a spirited drive but it would clear eventually if everything else is OK. You'll have to see how you go but if you have black smoke continuously, you have an overfuelling problem most likely caused by an air/boost leak of some description..... Unless there's a diesel "tuning" chip installed?
