Just out of interest what sort of driving do your cars do, I have an s60 d5 with the dpf and has been no trouble up to now over 100k miles but it spends it's life on motorways and A roads doing about 400 miles a week sometimes more. Saying that chauffeur dudes car has 350,000 so i imagine that this to has spent most of its time on motorways??

In which case you would not be wrong for thinking that oil dilution from the dpf is a slow killer of these engines making oil changes more and more important but also making running costs high due to price and quantity of oil needed.

Oil was changed after the injectors were renewed. I have done 300 miles since and needed to top up the oil.

The only remaining issue during the longest run (100mi each way) that flagged was the soot filter message, followed by the oil level low warning. I added a litre of oil and headed home by the shortest route. Got the oil warning light on again just before I got in, so a litre lasted about 150m.

Now topped up again but I am reluctant to drive it more than a short trip to the shops.

Not sure how else diesel can get in to the oil.

Sorry GB1 - to answer your question, it's an ex-police SE 185 with 150k on the clock. It does mostly round town trips with the occasional longer run to allow a regen (which has now stopped)

This may be way off beam.....
On Petrol engines there is an engine breather system, which if it gets clogged gives positive pressure which can be tested for by placing a plastic bag over an "empty dipstick" tube with the engine running.
Someone on here ( this bit of the site) had this issue and at " pushing on speeds with high RPM" could use 1 pint of oil in 100 miles. I can't remember the full in and outs.

I don't know if diesels run with the same/similar engine breather system - but if you do have positive pressure from the dipstick this could be a cause.

Cheers

Bob

Thanks 100k+. I'll take anything at the moment. I am desperate to get what is a really good car back to a decent running vehicle that doesn't have HGVs passing me up the slightest of inclines.

We do seem to have exactly the same problem. My car runs okay until I boot it past 2500rpm approx depending on load then goes into limp mode and 'Soot filter full' comes on. It will reset if turned off and parked for little while. This was happening on Friday and then on the way home 'Low oil level' warning came on! I put about half a litre in to bring it back up but had only done about 100 miles that day!! The engine starts well and the dealer reckons all the injectors were fine when they took them out to do swirl chamber linkage. Engine certainly sounds rattly now though. There is some DMF rattle at idle occasionally but hardly surprising as still on original clutch etc at 357,000 miles!! Engine is certainly more coarse sounding than it used to be. I haven't used the car over the weekend for chauffeur work as getting worried about it now!! Dealer wants to fit new DPF again but personally I think the engine is about to give up the ghost! Time to look for a new car!

Sorry Graham forgot to answer your question! Yes my car has spent a lot of time on motorway work. Probably at least 50/50 with A road/town work. I do a few local runs but the engine is warm and always does at least 100 miles a day most days. Should have had plenty of opportunity to regenerate properly! There have been times when I have done a Heathrow trip so done 200+ miles and when I am nearly home could tell the thing was trying to regenerate!! Doh!! I stand by what I said that the DPF has ruined my engine!

I am in agreement with you it certainly looks that way because if it had no dpf it would probably still be running well. I was just interested to know incase the cars usage would of had anything to do with it like short town journeys engine not getting hot ect ect but obviously this is not the case it's just down to the poor design of the system. The good old saying they don't build them like they used to! An older volvo engine with 350 k miles is only just getting run in haha

To test any breather issues, when the engine is hot and running pull the dip stick out, if you get smoke coming out then your pcv system is clogged, more or less the same as bob said. What year is it? This was shamelessly pinched from google but should give you an idea of the pcv system

Also thinking possible swirl flaps?

Sparki1 - tried to send you a PM about the DPF recommendations but it appears i don't post enough to be allowed to PM other members.

What's your experience?
