So following on after some further investigations....
We removed the MAP sensor from near the intercooler and it was very clean so hopefully it is working ok. We then turned our attention to the turbo actuator. It moved when starting and when revving the engine so seemed to be working ok. We disconnected the arm that is connected to the turbo and that appears to be moving freely too. Then we took the car for a drive and got the temperatures up. The turbo appeared to be pulling normally and all seemed good. We got back into the town where we had some time in slow moving traffic and then we came to a hill where I floored it and we had what I would call the stuttering like the turbo wasn't working properly. This coincided with the 'dump valve' chattering I have sometimes experienced (not always resulted in limp mode). We pulled off and cycled the ignition which made no difference so we got it back to my friend's house where the chattering continued. When revving you could feel the large turbo air pipes bulging in time to the chatter noise. Now the actuator arm wasn't moving when revved and it seems that the turbo was producing maximum pressure all the time. Upon cycling the ignition, the arm still failed to move, but after a little rest and a cool down everything started behaving normally again (actuator arm moving on startup and when revved) So we think it's probably the actuator. The noise was the the excess pressure being dumped which sometimes (but not always) caused limp mode. So I think it's worth trying a replacement. I've seen 'refurbished' ones on ebay but they look exactly like the non-branded ones for sale and I'm a bit dubious as to whether they are genuine Volvo ones or not (they don't show any branding on them like OEM ones) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184989424...3ABFBMtsv8l5Jk |

Could a turbo hose be collapsing inwards from the suction/vacuum from the turbo?
I had this happen on a euro 3 D5 which caused limp mode and a fluttering noise. |
