Any chance you could let me know how you get on with your lead/software.

Hi StevesVolvo,

I can confirm that the VOL-FCR FTDI demo software (in combination with the FTDI USB cable that I bought fromhttp://www.autotec-direct.com/usb-is...ware-428-p.asp)
does work.

You do need to install the FTDI drivers before use however. These drivers are provided on a CD-rom with the cable. Instructions are provided that guide through the installation and setting the COM port number.

cheers

Just received my activation code for the full software and it works perfectly. It shows all the fault codes with descriptions, and allows them to be cleared. On clearing, the orange light on the dash disappeared. So now I know that I have an ETC sensor failure!

It also allows live data such as engine coolant temperature, engine RPM, speed in MPH or KPH, mass air flow readings, Lambda readings, cabin temperature and information about the state of all the circuitry of the car such as air conditioning fan state, lock position etc. It really is comprehensive!

The only real critisism that I would make is that the software is not very intuitive or user orientated. The information it displays is faultless, however could be presented better.

Its a shame its not open source because the possibilities are endless!

all you need to do is work out what the readings mean and also whether what you are getting is right or not.

Hi there.
Can you tell me/us whether you are running XP or Vista?
I need to do, what you have just done, so I will have to buy a laptop.
If that software only works with XP; then I could easily make an expensive
mistake (it would not be the first time in my life)....
Many thanks, and hello to everyone.
Howard. 1997 V70 AWD. Motronic 4.4 B5254T (20V) 150.000 mls.

The Vol-FCR software versions for use with the FTDI & VCDS USB interfaces will work with Vista 32 but not Vista 64.
They should also work with Windows 7.

The serial version will also work with a small 'fix', however I would expect the need to use a serial version with Vista 32 machine is unlikely.

Unless you are buying the laptop for reasons other than just car use I'd get a secondhand Xp machine, lots of automotive software won't run on Vista.

Thanks for that Chris.
I dont think I will ever 'explore' 64 bit Vista.....

So it sounds as if it can work with XP or Vista then, have I got that right?
I am not experienced enough with diagnostic software, yet, but it is the way we have to go.
What are your views on OBD2 code readers for my car? if they did what 'it says on the tin', then one of them would 'do me', but, but?
I bought one about two years ago, for that day the light came on.
When that day came I found it was for Fenex, Not Motronic! There is no substitute for inexperience.
Many thanks.
Howard.

OBDII readers are OK and have advantages if you have a number if vehicles and you only need engine diagnostics.
But they are not as comprehensive as a vehicle specific tools, they won't help you with anything other than the engine and auto gearbox in the end it depends what faults you are going to get with your car, who knows!

Many thanks, Chris.
I dont want to Hi jack this thread, but.
Today I was lucky enough to borrow an EOBDII CAN scantool (ccr superstream), it read my code: P0108 manifold absolute pressure/barometric pressure circuit high input.
I canceled the code, got the engine warm, went for a six mile drive, and it has not come back.
I don't kid my self that all is well, but I can't tell from the scan tool information, what my next move ought to be. All help eagerly received...

They are still the original pair of O2 sensors, 150.000 mls, so I suppose they are suspects.

Thanks again,
Howard.
