The problem is getting accurate data, even from Volvo sources. The reference to B18 without the A or B came from a Volvo document, so it is very confusing.
I know there were changes to engines according to market, year and model installed into, and yes, this will increase the list size. But we have to start somewhere. Thanks for your info, it is this sort of positive response that will help create a more accurate listing. Bob

Is it the original engine?
One problem with the PV's is that often they had engine/gearbox upgrades over the years. I have even heard of the 1930's and 40's 6-cylinder cars having later engines installed. Dreadfull thing to do. Bob

B230k
Hi,
the list is now quite comprehensive, but I noticed you only have the B230K listed with the Pierburg carb. Information is scarce on the B200K / B230K, but I know for sure it was fitted with the Solex CISAC in the 240. AFAIK all 'K' engines in the 700 range had Pierburg carbs, - ie the B200K in the 700 would have been Pierburg, but I'm not sure the 240 ever got the same |

Brilliant research work! however there were also marine versions of many of these engines. In general the marine motors had bigger valves and wilder camshafts and amazingly high power outputs. Horsepower figures all need to be taken with a very large grain of salt as the quality of fuel has steadily declined over the years (5 star went yonks years ago). Once emission control was introduced power went down yet again and then they banned leaded petrol. The present ULP is OK for lawnmowers and chainsaws but it will cause valve seat damage in a lot of engines. Some cars just won't run properly on ULP, for example a friends classic Mercedes 230 (are we allowed to say Merc?) misbehaves when required to pull a small two berth caravan! That's absolutely ridiculous for a 2.3 litre car, but it was probably designed for five star fuel. Petrol aint petrol anymore!

1986 740 engines
These are from my 1986 740 owner's manual. The power and torque are DIN standard not SAE if that matters. Note there were 2 engine versions of the B230K in 1986 with different compression ratios. The diesels are missing from this list. I probably have some more 740 engine details in some of my green books (including USA models).

I'm sure some members are aware of this but it is not mentioned. From about the 1990s onwards (960,850,x70,etc), the engine codes can be split up as follows:
E.g. B5234T Ignore the B on the front Second digit is number of cylinders Third and fourth are the engine capacity Fifth digit is number of valves per cylinder Sixth (and sometimes seventh) are additional info So B5234T = five cylinder 2.3 20v turbo. |

Many thanks for all the replies. I am well behind with this project at the moment, but I will get it up-to-date soon.
