"Engine System Service Required" + Orange triangle

Hi all,

On my recently acquired 08/2006 V70 2.4 163HP D 5244 T (E4 engine) I have resolved and cleared numerous codes and the car is now running well.

I have VIDA but am not an experienced user.

The only codes remaining relate to Parking Assist sensors and the Alarm Siren.
I don't want to fix those yet.


The issue which I would like to resolve is the information message that I get when I start.

"Engine system service required"
and the solid orange triangle

Can I (use VIDA to) understand what is the cause of that message?

Yes. Definitely you have to use Vida and in my experience (with this and my other Volvo) will tell you what is going on.

Yes, I think VIDA would be useful, but I can't see which part of VIDA allows me to do that.

The diagnostics part, under 'delivery' is effectively a fault reader for all the various modules.

There will be a little map of the car with each module laid out as a sort of quick reference topology diagram and they are color code green for OK, orange for brief or intermittent fault, red ongoing or permanent fault

You'll be looking for any code starting ECM (engine control module) and then use the function that tells you common causes and suggested fixes for each

Or just get on Google with that code and come up with the answer you need

More than likely the alarm fault will be a leaked internal battery and knackered pcb you'll have to get a new siren module (c. £200) and refit. Up in the drivers side wheel arch behind the headlight. Have a read up on instructions there are loads of posts on that already

Yes thanks, I have fixed various faults, but the bit that I cannot do is understand why I am getting the "Engine System Service Required" message and the orange triangle on the instrument panel.

How can I find out what has caused it, and how can I clear it if I have fixed the fault?

What does .. text message, IV mean in the attached Vida screenshot?

None of the current faults relate to the ECM.

Apologies I obviously misunderstood,

is that a fresh reading, i.e. when you go connect to car and go to fault tracing and it comes up with the box saying 'update latest values' (or whatever it is) and you click yes, it reads it all again

I would be expecting to see the delivery tab active and current faults showing on that tab, which would presumably include the alarm siren and rear sensors as you haven't done them yet

That was a screenshot taken when I went back to Vida today, without the dongle plugged in to the USB (or connected to the car), so I believe it shows the results of the most recent scan.

Prior to this point I have fixed various faults and done UPDATEs.

It is difficult to read that screenshot, but I can connect and UPDATE and see if I can get a better image. ... I am pretty sure it will list the same items but you never know!

I suppose there is the other basic thing of checking battery voltage, giving it a good charge up if low, that can cause gremlins

Caveated with I haven't had this caption myself yet thankfully, however:

The first observation is that the vehicle diagram is very limited as though the ignition wasn't on, (or at pos 2), or the network wasn't complete when you scanned, (lots of module info missing including the ECM).

1. The message just means that you have Volvo text message number 4 and the text box and warning triangle are active.

2. Try expanding the text box with the 2 arrows at the right side of it just in case there's hidden info. VIDA seems to like hiding things.

3. Select the 'Action' box on the right for the same reason.

As Stuart says, this might be a basic electrical issue as I'm not sure the 'quick alternator test' would be siren or parking related.

Hi Stuart and Richmac,

Just prior to covid, the previous owner had a newish battery. Last year he didn't realise that it was now bad, so he charged and jump started the car many times but it had various problems, some to do with just sitting for a long time.

This seems to have generated a load of various codes.

Then I bought it.

I fitted a new battery, cleared all the codes, and have UPDATED several times as I fix various things (new MAF, new front calipers and discs, cleaned the throttle blade etc etc).

I will try to do a full scan tomorrow, with the key in position 2 and see what happens.
