Interesting info in this thread, I am suffering similar issues from my 1996 V70 tdi thats done 180K miles.

Not wanting to hijack I would just mention that , I have only started seeing bluish/white smoke having had diesel pump recently timed. And whilst it pulls much better I now see the bluish/white smoke when lifting off, or if holding revs at 2k whilst driving... I suspect turbo seals and I am guessing a good way to check is to remove the air feed (35mm?) pipe and look for oil?

Unhappy Early running Blue smoke.

The situation described is also similar with my 2007 V70 Auto although not on start up only when the temp. needle approaches the mid point. The turbo has been replaced which has made the condition worse, so my next step is a compression test and possible valve guide seal replacement. Performance and MPG are excellent at 122000 miles arguing that mechanically the engine is sound. Aren't Volvo engines supposed to do 250000 miles anyway? Thanks Aitchjay.
