But should I invest in a refurbished head for my old block or should I invest in a new engine?

I can get a used engine with approximately 250k km for 30k NOK (2.3k GBP). Or get a refurbished engine for 40-50k NOK (3-4k GBP). Or a refurbished head for 15k NOK (1000 GBP)

My engine is at 330k km, but have been serviced at Volvo until 1 year ago. How long should I expect my block to last?

There has been some metal in the oil produced from the damages in the head, so I will remove the head and inspect the cylinders before buying anything.
personally I would just get the refurbished head. Swapping the engine for another unknown can come with its own problems also as well as finding one that is an exact replacement. I’d do a couple of oil changes and as like you say as longs the bores are ok you back up and running. You’re also not stripping half the car swapping the engine out.

The D5 block is generally excellent.

I know of one with 680k (1094k km) miles and one with 750k (1207k km) miles on original engine

If you have a long history with your existing block and know that it has been properly serviced, as long as there is no damage to the bores or play in the pistons then you might as well stick with the block you know.

I am soon going to be fitting a replacement head to my v70

Thank you for the answers! Then I will keep my block as long as it is not damaged.

I found a used engine sold privately for quite an affordable price. (7000 NOK / 550 GBP). But this engine is from a V50 D5 and the engine code is D5244t8 (mine is D5244t4).

But when I search the cars up in VIDA, I find that the item numbers are identical for the central engine parts like the cylinder head and block. The engine also looks identical to mine.

Can this engine be identical to mine even though the engine codes differ?
I especially need to know that the cylinder heads are identical.

I have made another update to the photos folder: https://photos.app.goo.gl/zaobGrdvQHYYduwaA
See photos from VIDA part list and the engines (my black and his red car)
