So, I bought the unit recommended by 4 x 4, dug out an Android phone and downloaded the app.

I'm still learning how to use it with my 1998 V70 Tdi but so far it's looking very promising. It will read codes from the MSA15.7, the ABS unit and the AW50-42 transmission. I think it will probably read the SRS codes too but I haven't explored that part and don't feel inclined to go poking around in there unless it becomes necessary.

I haven't tried changing anything or clearing fault codes. (none to clear) but I can confirm it will run the dynamic pump timing test successfully, which is the main reason I was interested.

The timing was set by the local Volvo dealer about 3 years ago after I'd sorted out the aftermath of a cambelt failure.

The car is starting well, running well, passing emissions tests and generally behaving itself.

The result from the dynamic timing test is -2.7 degrees measured at a fast idle of 1200 rpm; just outside the spec for an old belt (belt is 3 years and 5,000 miles old).

I doubt it's worth adjusting it but at least now I can easily check it every so often and do something if it gets any worse.

To sum up, it seems useful and is certainly inexpensive. I'm impressed so far.

Thanks for all your comments to date.

Hi

Bit of a thread ressurection but I've been told this app may work on my 1996 940 to clear an SRS code ( I have the not quite OBD2 port in centre armrest cubby )

I dont have Android but can borrow one. Does anyone know what OBD bluetooth connector I would need ?

Don't know if it would work on your 940 to clear SRS, but the following adapter works great with my 1996 850 TDI and Xiaotec 850 OBD-II android app to read and clear codes and check live data. I did not ever need to clear SRS though... It also works with my 2013 V70 D3 and Carscanner app.

It is Vgate Icar2 ELM327 OBD2 Scanner Bluetooth with price between 12 and 18 EUR. Don't buy another cheaper than that cause it may have a lower version firmware which lacks support needed by the app.

Cheers

I'll need to do more investigation to see if the app works first

I would expect them to be the same as they are from the same era and same factory, but as it's all pre OBDII it's anyones guess

most 850s use obdo even though the socket is the same shape as obd2 this is why lots of code reader cant read 850s and some early other volvo models

Thats why I'm wondering if the app will work for SRS codes on my 96 940. If it's the same pin out ( 7 ) it might work
