Fenix 5.2 can be persuaded to part with diagnostic codes using a simple home-made flash code reader. I'm sure there are write-ups on here. I know this worked for my old V70, and the one I made years ago is still in service for our current S70, both with 2.5 10v non-turbo engines (B5252S).

Dead easy to make at home with an LED, a couple of paper clips and some cable.

Connect via the OBD port and count the flashes.

"Thanks you’ve given me a big piece of the puzzle. I do have the 2.5 10v so it won’t work. I also believe Vol-FCR won’t read Fenix 5.2. So that me Royally Sc£&*ed.
Does anyone know what will read Fenix 5.2."

I have the '97 V70 with the above engine & details: The Volvo FCR system had been demonstrated to me by a fellow member some time back - on the car.
Worked fine as he ran through the programme to include removing the engine service warning light.
Hope it helps.
Bob.

Default Update….

Thanks to everyone for their help.

So far I’ve managed to try an old Snap On professional scan tool which went no were near it. Oldest Volvo it could cope with was 2001 V/S 70.

Various enquires to icarsoft proved their Volvo Sabb products are no help.

I downloaded Vol-FCR Demo and bought the recommended KKL FTDI cable (£15)
It communicated with the car instantly but told me it did not recognise the ECU. So there we have it Fenix 5.2 confirmed.

If anyone wants the KKL FTDI cable used once £10 inc U.K. postage from Keith_hegarty@yahoo.com.

Now waiting for the recommended ELM 327 850 OBD II to arrive and if that fails will make myself a Flash Code reader and start counting the flashes Lol.

The only general-purpose, professional scantool that I know 100% will talk to these older Volvo's is the Autocom CDP+ system. It's coded by a Swedish team, so it makes sense that it works on pretty much any Volvo or Saab. However, you are looking at a lot of money to buy, then maintain this system (£ thousand) so only good if you have a pro-garage, or know of a local garage that uses this system.

Default Update - A little progress….

The 850 OBD-II communicated with the car and gave lots of info. Most of which I did not understand. It said 1 DTC 06. C1 - 121 Engine coolant temp sensor faulty signal. Yet no overheating or black smoke occurs.

This process flattened the battery as it did when then Snap On Scan tool was used.

The confusion comes when I double check the code against other Fenix 5.2 code lists.

One list states 121 is the MAP sensor. Which could be the MAP sensor itself or a vacuum leak. Yet no errors in air fuel ratio rich/lean etc, no misfiring or stalling etc.

Another list says 121 is an air pressure signal indicating a vacuum leak.

so progress made but unsure of the next move. Engine coolant sensor £25 Ebay.
MAP sensor for the car would be expensive.

Any guidance. Thanks.

Default Is it possible…..

Just as an aside

Is it possible to remove and replace the engine ECU with an exact ECU from a donor car?

Or are they individually programmed to the car and need setting up to recognise the new car.

Or is it just plug in and go?

Thanks.
