I tried to separate the motor from the EGR valve housing, in order to soak the complete housing in acetone, but couldn't maneuver it off the housing. On reassembly the mounting studs and nuts are that close to the motor spindle it took several attempts to align so that the main plunger moved freely. If out less than a mill proved difficult...it must move without restriction.

That’s really interesting, I wonder if a slight movement of the motor on its mounting is what causes the detent I feel in mine…

Can't say for certain, rxtian, but I had wondered why that chap on YouTube ground back the spindle on his example. Possibly different manufacturer?
When I initially separated the EGR valve from the EGR cooler the valve moved pretty well save for approximately 5% towards the end of its travel due to a small amount of carbon build-up behind the flap. Once the flap was cleaned and the motor aligned correctly it had a crisp/clean action. Might take a few attempts to align and tighten those 7mm nuts but I had no need to grind any components.

I just want to thank all you wonderful people who have helped with this problem. I took her to Volvo Specialist today for full diagnostics (£72 not bad).
Determined the EMAP is blocked. Some figures you may understand. At Idle 104 on revving 147 but should be 300 or more. Actually he may have said 400 but I was observing the very beautiful Volvo 245 on a J plate outside the front window and was not listening properly. It will go in next week to be cleaned at the same time they do the cam belt change. He said they do it with heat and dont need to take it off. Anyway, happy to finally know what the problem is and hope this helps others with the same issue. I posted Vida screens earlier in thread, with the codes relating to this problem so if you see these pretty non descript codes, go to Exhaust Pressure Sensor Once again, big thanks Jane and Paul |

Thanks for the update. Be really interesting to hear if it fixes it for you.
I spoke to a friendly Volvo tech and they also said to check my EMAP pipe before replacing the EGR as it’s usually that. They also described using a torch to burn it clean.

I just checked mine and I have the same numbers… the response of the sensor doesn’t make it seem blocked but fingers crossed for you mate…

Update. Job is done. Blocked or limited flow emap pipe. Car came home today with new Cam belt, oil/filter done, emap pipe cleaned. She runs perfectly now. No judders anywhere.
Can highly recommend The Corner Garage (Volvo Specialists) Near Preston Lancashire. These guys really know their stuff. Thank you all for continued support, good luck to any others that have this issue Best wishes Jane and Paul |

Thanks for the update! Pleased to hear yours is fixed - I’ve held off buying a new EGR valve for mine until you’d had the EMAP looked at.
What kinda revs were needed to get 400kpa? I have seen that high on mine in the logs from driving but not often:

Just had the EMAP sensor off the end of the pipe, can feel flow at idle and it’s blasting out when revved so don’t think that’s my issue…
