Changing the tailgate gas struts is a straightforward job. After the tailgate hit me on the back of the head yet again, I finally got around to doing it.

One problem you may sometimes encounter is that the driveshafts were originally assembled with metal adhesive on the splines into the hub. If this has been done, they can be absolute pigs to get apart.

Fortunately, when I had the CV joints boots replaced at the dealers many years ago, that was their problem and not mine! They came apart easily enough when I replaced the ABS reluctor rings last year.

I am used to fords and vauxhall cars as they are the ones I was taught on, this is the first time going away from them, so far I am liking this volvo, only prob is there is no volvo or audi garage close by be it main or independent, there is a volvo marine specialist.

well the boot struts are at the bottom of the list, got an mot to get through next month

Right been phoning up places today, mostly Diesel merine shops, and all but one has said nope, the one that did say ok is just a Diesel shop that mainly deals with Generators they have said, and i must give them credit for saying this, "they have never timed a car engine before but are willing to give it a go", they asked what pump it was so i told them and they seemed to know about the pump, did ask if they could replace the belt and pullys but thats where they said no even if i surpled the parts.

as for independent garages, well i have a distrust for most of them as been stung one to many times by them and as such try to avoid, the only one i do trust has flat out said no as he doesnt have the the equitment or the knowlage.

so this leaves me to ether work out whats going on my self, trust an independent, or trust that deisel place.

as such i have been looking around on audi forums, from what i have read the pump has about 50 of timing where its at the pressure needed and the really timing is done by the injector firing at the right time, they talk about the injectors being electroicly controled by the ECU, i see no wires going to the injectors apart from number 4 and that is only a sensor for timing reasons, but they also talk about a 7 pin plug that goes in to the pump and some times the wiring to this is damaged and they can cause problem with time, i under stand a few people also use this plug to install the evry mod, well i cant seem to locate this plug or wiring, have found a plug with 3 wires going to the pump.

any ways my understanding of how this works is this:
the pump needs to be synced to the cam, the ECU has some controle over the timing in side the pump its self this is for help with cold starts only as soon as the engine/fuel is up to temp the pump should be all timed up to the cam, as for the injectors they fire when the pressure is right and will stay open for as long as the pressure is there, as far as i can tell the dyn timing uses the 4th injector and some thing else in the pump to show the timings, if the 4th injector is faulty the engine light should be on as this is also used by the ECU to keep the engine in check, so this brings me back to the pump wiring if i can ever find it.

i could be wrong about all of this but this is what i have come to while searching for info and have been told by the ever so helpful diesel geny guys.

Edit:
Ok found the wiring to the injectors, missed it as it looks like piping, and the 7 pin plug is hidden behind that pump/vac thing, can't see the wiring and can't check as its way to hot right now

PNuT has a proven track record for sorting out timing issues with these engines. I'm sure he'll see you right.

Ok it been a few weeks now and it does start teaser that it did but.... on a cold start I need to give it a little throttle as its feels and sounds like a cylinder is not there after about 10 secs its all good and runs fine for the rest of the day, was thinking an injector sticking or some thing, so have put in a full bottle of redecorating in to half a tank, has had good resolts in the past.

Would this exsplane the funny tinning data I have been getting if one of the injectors is not firing right?

I may be able to shed a little light on the funny timing data.

I've been playing with the 850 OBD 2 app and the dynamic pump timing program. It showed my pump timing as -2.8 degrees, just outside the limit for an old belt. Unfortunately it's already at the end of the adjustment range that's available by moving the idler and tensioner so I'll have to move the cam pulley slightly.

I tried setting the idler and tensioner to the mid range of their adjustment; probably a change of no more than 2 degrees, albeit in the wrong direction and the app showed a spectacular timing error of well over 600 degrees.

It looks as though the software can only show the timing over a range of a few degrees. I suspect it cannot cope with an error of much more than 4 degrees and then throws up a nonsensical reading.

Putting the idler and tensioner back where they were brought the timing within range although I'm still out by -2.8 degrees.

Did you manage to sort out your timing issue? Mine was running lovely did the timing belt on the fuel pump and its showing 650° out of time. I was imagining this would be incredibly far out but if a small adjustment can throw it out on your car to a similar range I might not be that far off timing it.
