Great news, let us know how it goes on a longer run?

900 is about right for tickover on these, so don't worry about that.

Well, I'm taking the old girl from Sheffield to Robin Hood's Bay and back next week, so that'll be a test. It's been running OK on the few local journeys I've made, but the lambda light is still on.

So far, I've had both O2 sensors replaced (with good quality ones, not generics) and replaced the vacuum hoses (most of them). So if the lambda light stays on, I guess the next thing will be cleaning the throttle valve and the MAF sensor, which I haven't done yet.

Best bet would be to read the codes, then clear them and see what comes back. Just guessing and shotgunning it with parts is expensive and time consuming.....

If you can't read the codes, post back as there are some fairly cheap solutions to this, and it's an invaluable tool to have.

Well, a drive from Sheffield to Robin Hood's Bay and back went OK, lambda light notwithstanding. Average 24.9 mpg which seems OK for a heravily laden car of that engine capacity. Only thing was it seemed slightly slow and laboured (for a V70r) on steep hills, like Blue Bank out of Whitby. But that might have been the people, dogs and half a ton of camping gear in the back.
I don't have the facility to read codes, no. I do have a USB lead which will connect to the OBDII port but I don't have a laptop to plug it into.
There's an independent Volvo specialist in Sheffield, a small place, which has a good rep. I might try them if all else fails.

In that case I'd strongly recommend getting an ELM dongle (we can help you with which one to buy) and downloading the 850 OBDII app onto your phone - this will read (and reset) ALL the codes you might ever encounter and much more besides. The dongle plugs into the OBDII port and communicates with your phone via bluetooth. I did it last year, cost me around £20 all in, which for me is a no-brainer. You really need to get the codes read, fault resolved and the Engine Management light out, especially as the MoT man won't like it.....

Yes, the light was off when I took it for MOT in April but came on during emissions test. The emissions were borderline so he passed it seeing as the light had only just come on. In his opinion the engine was running a bit rich.

I shall buy a dongle. Which do you recommend?

Cheers
Ordered the scanner but might need to buy an Android phone unless there's a similar app for iphone? I can't find a Volvo-specific one.

Also wondered about this instead

These gadgets are all new to me so I'm not sure whether this will do as good a jub as the scanner and app combo or not.

No, the Xiotech app only works on Android. Any old phone will do though, I'm sure you could find someone with an old one tucked away that will work - I did!

Make sure you buy the ELM 327 dongle specified by member 4x4 in the above mentioned threads, not all dongles are as "compatible" as they'd like you to believe, and that one definitely works.

This one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125378422912
