I towed my caravan from Shoreham to Middlesborough last Monday, 320 miles with my XC60 D5 Se-Lux using the Adaptive Cruise Control which is THE BEST INVENTION EVER.
Set to 63MPH all the way, I achieved 22.5 MPG which I reckon os pretty good considering the car had only done 1600 miles before I left. Because the system monitors the speed of whatever is on front of you, it is so relaxing and easy to drive. Of course, you have to keep your wits about you but it is infinately better that 'normal' cruise control, especially in this country. |

Towed with new car for first time, car is 2003 S60 D5, from Inverness to Berwick (and return). Used the cruise control most of the time and found no problems with it. If I needed to speed up, I just pressed the pedal down than let it up when I did not need the extra speed. I have towed in the past with a 940 2.3 lpt and found that this would not pull in 5th with the caravan on, which is 1300Kg fully loaded. With the D5 the power is there all the time and only needed to changed down on the biggest of hills.
Looking at the other replys, it looks like many people have auto's and have also forgotten the speed limits for towing ( I am sure this will get a few replies). As for mpg, mine was around the 35 mark, with the 940 this was 20-25 mpg on a good day. For me cruise control makes the trip a lot easier to do |

Seeing as I get 35 without cruise control when towing, I'll do the same now!

Going back to the Clarkson program, I think it would have been improved if they had shown him being overtaken by a line of impatient caravanners making rude gestures at him for holding them up!
Towing with cruise control is brilliant, especially in Europe on the clear roads. I do this a lot as my spare-time job, so I guess fuel economy doesn't really come into the equation. Just replaced my car, and ensured auto and cruise were on the list of must-haves. Now all I need is a towbar! Stay safe. |

cruise.
i tow with an auto but i very rarely use the cruise.i think cruise is great but i found myself constantly slowing and speeding up again as people pull out in front of you or i,m behind drivers who find it impossible to drive at a constant speed.my feet were on and off the pedals just as much as normal auto driving but cruise as a concept is very good especially on motorways.probably best abroad on less congested autoroutes.

I have recently acquires V70 with cruise control and towed a caravan some 150 miles using it extensively. Love it
