XC40 Clutch problem
Hi
I had a brand new XC40 clutch burn out at 12,000 miles, but I also had gears seeming to be in wrong gear. Dealership blamed me - driver error! I'd be interested to know which dealership said there were clutch issues please? I've got a case with TMO at present. Any info would be really helpful |

Same issue
My wife has just had the same issue including the display showing gears dropping (manual gearbox), engine racing and clutch burnt out. She is on the M1and now being towed to Volvo!! The car is under 3 years old with 11,000 miles!

XC 40 issue
Volvo have now stripped the engine and it is a fault with the crankshaft and thrust bearing. Luckily we had 1 month left on the warranty so covered. It seems that some people are being told it is a clutch when its something else. The Volvo mechanic told me it is a fairly common fault.

Crank thrust bearing failure for whatever reason would cause issues on a manual gearbox car, either wont engage or disengage or just weird stuff happening.
If dash figures what gear it is in by calculating road speed vs rpm vs clutch position then yeah can imagine the dash showing random gears. But it would still physically be in the gear you put it in last. Clutch would likely slip until it was worn to death. Driven quite a few modern diesels with not under 50k and worn slipping clutchs. Mine only lasted 292k and not the 300k I wished it got out of it, don't build them like that anymore. |

Clutch issues
Along the same lines but not.
I recently bought a 60k miles T3 Manual R-Design from local Volvo dealer and it had the Selekt Warranty. Yes higher mileage but it was all that available at the time I was looking to buy and was on budget. Has nearly all the packs on apart from 360 cameras. Pilot Assist, Carp Play, Heated seats and wheel etc etc. Had it a week and the clutch pedal was sticking with a an odd sensation through the accelerator pedal. Resistance from pedal disappeared and you could see the clutch pedal drop?? Back in and left with them whilst I had a courtesy car. Clutch and Slave Cylinder swapped out. Felt fine for a few days, then the same thing. Back in again Master Cylinder swapped out...few days later, same issue and back in again. Left with them this week whilst I have one of their courtesy cars. I mentioned to them about crankshaft and thrust bearing. They take it in and are now awaiting a Volvo Selekt Engineer to come out as they have detected that it could be the bearing after all. Looks like I'll have an another couple of weeks in the courtesy until it's sorted, but at this point I am considering rejecting the car as I've lost all faith in the manual T3. Should have stuck to my guns and bought an Auto T4/T5 Phev. Will see what happens in the coming weeks.
