You are doing a good job luke keep it up
A lot of comments says the 940s are rust free well I'm beginning to think that there's more of them with some rust
Issues like mine not major but hidden away in places we don't see out of sigh out of mind!
So please keep a look out as my thoughts are rust is a danger economicly for our cars the newest ones are now 24 years old and have been through some bad winters with the rocksalt on our roads .only my thoughts!

So I've used jenolite rust remover and wire brushed to remove as much surface rust as I could, painted it with zinc anti rust primer and stonechipped it.
I forgot to say that Halfords actually sell the top coat ready mixed in the right colour code for something like £9 a can so I'll give it a go and see how good it is.

Always best to completely cut out and patch, just watch the heat while tacking the patch in or you could warp the panel, of course this all depends on what tooling you have to be able to make new patches in the correct contours, sorry if you already know this just trying to help.

I can't believe how long it has been since I touched this car!

It's just been left abandoned on the driveway as it's a fighter and wouldn't run.

My mate has been house sitting for me this week as I'm on holiday and he asked if he could have a go at getting it running, I said go for it as I've not got time for it.

He has gutted the piranha alarm system and rejoined the wires that had been cut. It was an absolutely awful job done by the installer with wires twisted and taped, badly soldered joints and multiple wires going to absolutely nothing!

So he has done all of that for me, it has spark and compression so fuel must be the issue. My mate said he can smell unburnt stale fuel coming out the exhaust and even with power to the pumps directly from two batteries it doesn't want to run, it looks like a seized in tank pump, old fuel and rust are the issue here.

Also something has leaked on to the drivers seat and dissolved the leather!!! Luckily the drivers seat doesn't work so I need to either replace that section of leather orrrrr bucket seats! If I can get some nice adjustable bride or recaro bucket seats in black I'll be happy.

So yes I really need to finish off the MK2 760 and sell it so I have some funds for this rot box to get back on the road.

So the plot thickens, I got home and my mate has finished tidying up the wiring that the piranha alarm system was bodged in to.

He has hoovered the inside out and given it a thorough jet wash and scrub up with a cutting compound applied to the sponge and it has come up really well!

The return line to the tank has a leak and as we know the fuel tank is full of rust he has cut the fuel lines and put the return and pickup lines in a jerry can of petrol as the underfloor pump actually works. So we know it's getting fuel and with a new set of spark plugs it has a strong spark, it now starts for a second then dies, this is what it used to do when I was spraying wd40 in the intercooler pipes but now it does it off of fuel so it's progress. Out of curiosity I pulled one injector plug off and it made no difference to how it ran, so I pulled a 2nd one off and again no difference, so I pulled all four off and it started and ran three times on all four cylinders before refusing to start.

So now I'm thinking the injectors aren't firing but instead are just leaking a bit of fuel in to the combustion chambers, enough to get it to start and run for a second and then that's it or the injectors are only being told to fire for a second then stop. So I've ordered a set of noid lights which I've wanted for years but never really had a reason to buy them until now. So hopefully I'll be able to see if the injectors are still getting the signal to fire or not. If it is then I'll try another set of injectors and see if that gets it to run, out of curiosity I tried a "new" ECU and power stage module from a known running car but it made no difference.

Based on this and assuming it has the injector resistor pack, i would unplug said pack, spray both sides of the plug pins with contact cleaner (or WD40 would do at a pinch) and remake then unplug several times finally giving it a good spray before reconnecting and then try starting again.

My noid lights have arrived, I know I can make them myself but that means having free time just to save £10 and I value my free time more than that.

So next week I'll hopefully see if the injectors are even getting signal.

Noid lights show the injectors are getting a signal.

So I pulled the fuel rail up tonight with the very manky looking injectors still attached. I cranked it over, one fires correctly, one dribbles fuel the two others are dead. So I've fitted a set of 940 injectors I had on a spare engine and it runs! Very smoothly too considering it hasn't ran for potentially 16 years.

Half ten at night is the best time to work on 38 year old Volvos 🤣
