Default 2010 V70 1.6 Drive - loss of power

After Taking on £20 worth of Shell Diesel at a services on the M40, noticed a steady loss of acceleration, mainly on hills but also on overtaking. At the next services I pulled in and revved the engine to see whether there was any loss in power, only to find revs were limiting to 3000 RPM. I also added a further £20 of BP fuel in case the Shell diesel was the problem. On restarting, the 'Engine system service' warning came on, and I struggled to accelerate to rejoin the motorway - eventually doing so by running along the hard shoulder.

The engine continued to struggle, although it felt perkier from time to time later in the journey, but the warning light remained on and revs were limited to 3000 RPM, which caused continued struggle up inclines and on overtaking.

Could this be contaminated diesel, or something more expensive? Any ideas please?

Default Fuel filter

i've just been under the car to drain and/or replace the fuel filter. Where is it? Haynes says it should be on the RHS amongst the rear suspension sub-frame, but I can't see it.

Am I being a nugget?

It's exactly there, obscured by suspension parts and not easily visible when accessing from the rear of the car.

Its a 1.6d,

Its under engine cover on lefthand side,

You will need a plunger thing to bleed fuel system as these don't have an in tank pump,
